Fabrica (Old Mill)
Project area: 50m2
Program: Historic Cretan Stonehouse Renovation
Status: Permitting
In reimagining the Old Stone Mill, nestled in the heart of Crete, our design philosophy is rooted in the meticulous restoration of its ancient stone walls, resurrecting the former Venetian stone house to its original grandeur. Central to our approach is the painstaking restoration of the old and crumbling stone walls, a process that embraces the rich history embedded in every weathered stone. Our commitment to preserving the authenticity of the site is reflected in the thoughtful rehabilitation of the structure, ensuring a seamless blend between the original Venetian architecture and the contemporary interventions.
A highlight of the design is the addition of a transparent glass box crowning the structure, a modern counterpart that both contrasts with and complements the ancient stone below. This juxtaposition serves as a metaphorical dialogue between the old and the new, preserving the historical integrity of the site while introducing a contemporary layer that harmonizes with the surrounding environment.
The glass box, strategically positioned on the top floor, acts as a mezzanine that not only expands the usable space but also provides panoramic views of the rugged Cretan landscape. This deliberate integration of modernity into the historical fabric allows inhabitants to connect intimately with the surroundings, maximizing natural light and offering breathtaking vistas.
